You're Disappointing The State - Dr. Otchere-Ankrah Blasts MPs

Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a Governance Expert, has admonished the Members of Parliament to resume government business following the Supreme Court verdict invalidating the Speaker's declaration of some seats as vacant.

The Supreme Court, by a 5-2 majority decision, ruled that the Speaker's declaration is unconstitutional.

"In a majority decision of five-two, Lovelace Johnson JSC and Ahmadu Tanko JSC dissenting on the issue of jurisdiction, the plaintiff's action succeeds the full reasons and orders of the court shall be filed with the registrar by close of date, tomorrow, 13th, November 2024 the is the judgment of the court," the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo stated.

In view of the court ruling, Parliament is expected to resume soon but Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, has charged the Minority Caucus not return to Parliament until after the upcoming elections.

“They should not waste the taxpayers’ money by asking us to come to Parliament in the next three weeks. We are not coming. We are concerned about elections, and we shall only come to Parliament after the elections. That should be at the back of their minds,” he said.

Commenting on the matter during Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' show, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah cautioned the MPs against the implications of their actions, particularly to the Minority who is refusing to return to the House to continue parliamentary business.

He noted that their adamant posture will adversely affect government business stating "you are disappointing the State" but stressed they should act in the interest of the nation.

He also charged Speaker, Alban Bagbin, to heed the ruling and ensure Parliament reconvenes.
