Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to heed the calls on him to declare a state of emergency over galamsey.
Organized Labour together with many Ghanaians has charged the President to take immediate action to stop the galamsey activities destroying the water bodies and environment.
They have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike should the President fail to institute a mechanism to ensure galamsey (illegal mining) becomes a thing of the past.
“ORGANIZED LABOUR will urgently embark on series of demonstrations and a nationwide strike if government fails to address the concerns raised by end of September 2024. We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to join organized labour in the fight against this menace,” they issued a statement.
The Governance lecturer at the Central University lamented the apathy of the government and security agencies in combatting this menace.
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah pleaded with the President to confront galamsey head-on saying "Mr. President, fight for us, especially the underprivileged...Galamsey is causing misery; let's solve the problem".
He also charged the security agencies to wake up and arrest those involved in the illegal mining.
"Let the law work", he exclaimed on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' show.
